Open-air museum in Svidnik
The Folklore exposition in nature is located on the area of 10 hectares in the neighbourhood of open - air theatre. On the base of substantial material the complex folklore exposition opened in 1982, illustrates to the visitors basic living conditions of the Ruthenians - Ukrainians of Slovakia in the past. The most typical landmarks of folklore architecture and living in this part of Slovak Republic are concentrated here. Typical folklore furniture, home inventory, traditional working tools and the samples of folklore art are placed in removed and reconstructed objects. Besides the main types of buildings there are all kinds of traditional outbuildings: barns, pigsties, granaries, stables, cellars, wells and other smaller buildings. These objects are used forthe installation of traditional of traditional agricultural tools, e. g. various kinds of carriages, ploughs, baskets for crap, etc.
Technical buildings and outbuildings are represented by watermill, windmill, sawmill and other smaller objects. These are located alongside a stream, where there are all necessary conditions for demonstration of their activities there.
As to cult buildings, the wooden church (1766) from the village of Nova Polianka (Mergeska) with abundant interior decoration is located in the exposition.
In the effort to introduce folk culture of the Ruthenians - Ukrainians of Slovakia in as detailed way as possible, there are also the most basic ways of making a living shawn - agriculture and farming.
The area of the Open-air museum is connected to modern open-air theatre, where 30-50 thousand visitors of traditional FESTIVALS OF CULTURE OF RUTHENIANS - UKRAINIANS OF SLOVAKIA gather annually. Since 1986 one of the folk-ethnographical programmes of the traditional FESTIVAL named TREASURES OF THE PEOPLE, takes place in the folklore exposition in nature. Traditional folk wedding, Easter customs, christening, spinning, games of children, markets, folk ammusements in village, the samples of traditional folk handicrafts, etc. may be seen in the programme.
